Nathalie Khayat
Untitled vessels, from The Eye Above the Well series
Unglazed porcelain
2015
The Eye Above the Well explores ideas of the unexpected, resilience, damage, and repair, and emerges from Khayat’s devastating experience of surviving a car-bomb explosion close to her studio in Beirut in 2012. Produced in a single season, the series reflects a therapeutic process of experimentation with accident and error: through the act of pulling and pushing, stretching the pieces, wrapping her arms around the vessels to transport them (akin to an embrace), cutting and tearing them up, and letting them sweat up and deform, only to put them back together.
