Hala Kaiksow
Lubni Shirt & Kumhi Dress, from the SS19 Al Kimiya Collection
Cotton and lightweight slub linen
2018

Hala Kaiksow is a designer based between Bahrain and London who launched her own sustainable womenswear label in 2016. Her brand centres around workwear with a twist, drawing on a range of references from nomadic Berber communities to ancient drapery. The overall look of the skirt is derived both from a garment from the late 80s, as well as, a worship statue from the Dilmun era at the Bahrain History Museum. The Lubni shirt is made out of cotton that has been created in a small mill in Japan. It is inspired by spinners’ shirts from the nineteenth century, in particular from paintings created by the artist Alber Anker.

Sharit Dress, from the SS19 Al Kimiya Collection
Linen and denim
2018

The Sharit dress was inspired by a paper dress created by Ivano Vitali which uses discarded newspapers as the medium to create the dress. The simplicity of the dress is one of the aspects that sparked Kaiksow’s interest and inspired her to try to create the same kind of minimally wasteful dress.
